A market cap by country chart is only as honest as its source. Most free charts online are screenshots of World Bank tables with no dates, no methodology, and cherry-picked years. If the chart does not say which year and which indicator, close the tab.
A good chart shows three things at once:
- Total market cap in USD, so size is comparable
- Market cap as % of GDP, so depth is comparable
- Year-over-year growth, so momentum is visible
Also check whether the chart is in USD or local currency. A country can look like a rocket in dollars while going nowhere at home, purely on FX. And watch the axis: linear scales make the US look like the only market that exists. Log scales show you the rest of the world.
WorldMarketStats's country pages show all three for 104 countries, 2000 to 2025. And if you want the growth column refreshed without checking back, CapitalDrift's free weekly leaderboard does exactly that, with rotation signals at $10/mo.
Next time someone posts a country market cap chart, ask for the year and the source. Most cannot answer.
